Independent on Sunday is to be the first tabloid-sized Sunday
newspaper to run full-page ads on its back page when it relaunches
this weekend. Like other tabloids, the paper has previously used
the back page of its main section, for sport, which will now start
on the inside back cover. The title is also offering advertisers
the opportunity to run strip ads on a new weekly double-page centre
spread feature. The paper will now be published in just two tabloid-size
96-page sections. The first is led by news and comment and also
features travel. The second, The New Review, is a slightly larger,
full-colour version of The Sunday Review magazine incorporating
elements of its former ABC supplement, including a central arts

BBC
Worldwide is creating a digital team to develop and launch of
a number of community-based, video-rich websites. The move marks
a major expansion of BBC Worldwide's digital ambitions. Until now,
it has primarily focused on running websites as an extension of
existing BBC brands, such as the Radio Times and Top Gear. The 30-strong
team - headed by the BBC Worldwide managing director for magazines,
Marcus Arthur - already has plans to launch three websites by the
autumn. BBC Worldwide, the corporation's commercial arm, has earmarked
15 areas for potential online launches, or re-launches of existing
websites. The new team, called Digital Delivery, will be responsible
for rapidly assessing and delivering all of BBC Worldwide's consumer-targeted
online launches. Source: Media Guardian
Concern over Google's dominance in online advertising has
prompted the US federal trade commission to investigate its $3.1bn
(£1.56bn) takeover of internet marketing firm DoubleClick.
The purchase of DoubleClick, announced last month, is intended to
give Google enhanced software, and stronger relationships with agencies
seeking to place advertisements in strategically important positions
on the web. Privacy campaigners say the tie-up poses risks to consumers,
by allowing Google to track the online activity of individuals more
closely. Industry rivals, including Microsoft, AT&T and WPP,
complain that it will give Google too much muscle in the online
advertising market, worth $17bn last year in the US. The FTC declined
to comment on the investigation, which was leaked to the US media.

Cinema
found to be most effective medium for ads. Consumers are more receptive
to advertising in the cinema than on any other medium, new research
conducted for the Cinema Advertising Association suggests. In the
online survey of 3,000 people who had been to the cinema in the
past six months, 20% of respondents said they paid "a lot"
of attention to ads in the cinema, compared with just 12% for TV,
7% for magazines and 6% for outdoor. Advertising is seen as a key
part of the cinema experience, with 34% saying it would be worse
without it - more than any other medium. Eight out of 10 cinema-goers
noticed posters in the foyer while two out of
three noticed standees. Source: Mediaweek
